Thailand, Phuket Island, Phuket Town and Surrounds

I'm now playing catch up because this will be the third time I've tried to write this post. I got so fed up trying to publish the other two that in the end I deleted them in despair! Not sure whether it's the strength of signal or what but I'm trying on the phone this time instead of the tablet. Anyway, attempt number 3!!
Was going to post this morning, went to the draft and three quarters of the text had vanished!! So here we go again with a much shortened version!!
Arrived Phuket Island 3 days ago now. It's the biggest of the Thai islands and consequently doesn't feel that much like an island. Stayed in Phuket Town itself which is in the south. Not much at all to commend it really and as it rained pretty solidly for the first 2 days I didn't particularly get up to much. The temperature is mid to high 20s so extremely muggy. Ventured out a couple of times with a very robust brolly but not a lot to do or see in the town itself. The weather finally broke yesterday so I hired a taxi and had a look around the coast of the south west quadrant. I'm not sure what I really expected but as with Phuket Town I was somewhat dissapointed. The beaches themselves are quite nice and the sand is beautiful but it's what's behind them I guess. It lacks a bit of quality and in places is downright 'Blackpoolesque'. There were one or two nice spots but my overall impression was poor. Took the ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Island today. The crossing was good my and first impressions are far more favorable.
The pictures are from Phuket Town and its weekend market and are more for my record than for sharing at this stage.
Speak soon,
G
